Hey You... Fear Not. The Universe Thinks You're a Badass.

be Sep 20, 2017

I recently ran across a thought-provoking quote while getting some “imperative” working in.

You know, the kind of work that happens because you are already awake at 2 a.m. eating brownie batter out of a mixing bowl underneath a Snuggie—and denying that you are doing all of the above because something is eating at you.

In my case, my trip down the Google image rabbit hole landed me in a sea of indie shapes and geometric designs that boasted of seemingly endless supplies of inspiring quotes.

“Keep your face always towards the sunshine—and the shadows will fall behind you,” I read.

But, despite my Southern upbringing, I wasn’t sure that this was a Walt Whitman kind of problem. So, I kept looking.

“Don’t settle,” said Steve Jobs. “As with matters of the heart, you will know it when you find it.”

“You’re a ghost driving a meat covered skeleton made from stardust riding a rock floating through space… What do you have to be scared of?”

Wango bango.

I wasn’t sure what I felt while I sat reading this, but I knew that it stirred me. So, I read it one more time.

“You’re a ghost driving a meat covered skeleton made from stardust riding a rock floating through space… What do you have to be scared of?”

I think it is safe to say that this isn’t your typical Pinterest quote.

It isn’t exactly beautiful, after all, and, well, it’s frankly pretty damn weird and because, I too, am frankly pretty damn weird, it hit home—while simultaneously hitting the reasons I was awake at 2 a.m. eating brownie batter out of a bowl underneath a Snuggie.

Call it escaping reality or call it flat out denial, but we all have this place that we go to when we are unsure of the world and everything happening in it. One of my safe places is work. Healthy or not, I hide in productivity, or the illusion of it to make sense of things that make about as much sense as seeing a pterodactyl flying through Wal-Mart. (Great. I now want to see a pterodactyl flying through Wal-mart… thanks, 2 a.m. brownie batter sugar high. Thanks for that.)

Do you have a place that you escape to when things aren’t making sense in your life? We all do. No matter what you are going through in your life, every single anxiety that any of us will ever face, even when it feels like something else entirely, can be summed up in one word—“fear.”

The fear of the unknown,

The fear of being alone,

The fear of getting sick,

The fear of never having our dreams come to pass…

No matter who we are or what we have or how much we make or what we do, there will always be something that scares the living hell out of us. The important thing is that we do not let it scare us off the path of our destiny. I’m sure that we all have different beliefs on who creates that destiny and why, but I know that no matter what you believe, deep down your soul knows something that you may not even know yet.

That something is that you were created for such a time this. You were made with everything that you need to seal the deal, to break out on your own, to conquer that mountain ahead or just make it through another day on minimal Starbucks runs without throat punching the first jerk who crosses you the wrong way. Whatever it is, you were made especially gifted and most importantly resilient for everything you will ever have to face.

Albert Einstein did not speak until he was 4 years old. In fact, his teachers were blatant turds about his steady-paced start stating that he must be “stupid” or “unteachable.” Nope… he was just saving up his words for something spectacular. None of us know what was going on in the mind of baby Einstein during those silent years. Maybe something incredible was being knit together in his brain, I don’t know, like say the theory of relativity.

It is said that Edison failed 1,000 times in attempting to create a working lightbulb, but many experts now say that the number may be closer to 10,000. Imagine that. Today, if we fail more than 5 times at conquering a level of Angry Birds… we rage-delete the app.

USC disliked Steven Spielberg so much that he was rejected from USC, twice. He would later go on to get an honorary degree and become a trustee of the university.

Van Gogh sold one painting in his lifetime. We all know how that one turned out.

I know I’m not any of these amazing guys in history, but I do know that even legends must get scared sometimes. Whether that was the fear of not being smart enough or never getting it right, everybody has something that keeps them up at night.

While I cannot pretend to know whatever it is that you may be going through or will go through in your life, I can assure you that you are well-equipped for whatever that thing is or will be. Whatever shakes you to the core, whatever gives you chills, whatever makes your heart sink down thinking that it may never come to pass, just remember that the universe must have thought you were pretty badass to let the odds stack up against you so high. That takes a lot of faith in what you can handle. I mean, after all, “You’re a ghost driving a meat covered skeleton made from stardust riding a rock floating through space… What do you have to be scared of?”
